“Don’t Veer for Deer” – that’s the reminder from AAA Michigan as the firearm deer season kicks off on Sunday. AAA says over 43 percent of vehicle-deer crashes occur in Michigan during the months of October, November, and December. The American Automobile Association offers some tips and reminders if you encounter a deer on Michigan roadways this fall. Be especially alert at dawn and dusk – key hours of movement for deer. If you see one deer, be sure to slow down as it’s likely more are nearby. Finally, if a crash is unavoidable, don’t swerve! Brake and hold the wheel firmly, stay in your lane, and bring your vehicle to a controlled stop. Last year, 1,429 people were injured in car-deer crashes and 12 people were killed. AAA says over 54,000 deer crashes were reported in 2019.
