Michigan State Police have identified the man killed in an altercation Wednesday evening south of Reading. 32 year old Oscar Herrera was shot and killed by a Hillsdale County Sheriff’s deputy who had come to the residence on a complaint of a dog at large. Upon arrival the dog allegedly attacked and bit the deputy and the deputy shot and killed the dog. Herrera, angered by the death of the dog, then reportedly came at the deputy with a knife. Herrera was then shot and killed by the deputy. Neither State Police nor the Sheriff’s Department is releasing the name of the deputy who has been in law enforcement for over seven years. We will continue to update this story as details emerge.
