The Hillsdale County Treasurer’s Office is alerting residents to a very convincing scam aimed at taking money from unsuspecting property owners.

Chief Deputy Treasurer Tamra Lang tells WCSR News, a number of local residents have received calls from people claiming to represent the Hillsdale County Treasurer’s Office.

The scammers tell their intended victims that they have delinquent property taxes that need to be paid immediately over the phone.

The callers have used the names of actual local employees–They’re also able to rig Caller ID so it appears the call originates locally.

Lang said the Treasurer’s Office will NEVER call to demand money. They send bills via U.S. Mail.

She said anyone with questions or concerns about their property taxes can call the Treasurer’s office at 517 437 4700.

Scam activity is an ongoing problem as crooks use increasingly complex methods to trick potential victims into giving up their hard earned money.

As always–NEVER give sensitive personal or banking information to ANYONE who makes unsolicited contact–Whether it’s by phone or email.

Coincidentally, this week is International Fraud Awareness Week.
