The Hillsdale City Council gave its support to an application for a liquor license by the company that is renovating the Keefer House Hotel downtown.

Illinois-based CL Real Estate has been working to renovate the long-vacant building for a couple of years.

The plan is to open a small boutique hotel and restaurant, along with some retail space.

The company is applying to the MIchigan Liquor Control Commission for a “resort type” liquor license.

At the most recent City Council meeting, Hillsdale City Attorney Tom Thompson said a Resort liquor license requires the holder to offer some tourism value and draw in visitors from outside the area.

Council voted 7-1 to support the application–Councilman Bruce Sharp cast the only dissenting vote.

The application still requires approval from the Liquor Control Commission
